Founded in Melbourne, Australia, in 1981, Defries Industries, a family-run medical manufacturing business, significantly increased their manufacturing and processing capacity in 2015. Opening a new Head Office in Dandenong South and a state-of-the-art cleanroom, Defries found themselves confronted with considerable energy costs. Seeking a solution, they engaged Upstream.
To address this, Upstream designed, funded, and commissioned a 100kW rooftop solar system under a low-cost, fixed price consumption Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The solar system, a 100kWP rooftop array, was tailored to maximise returns from Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) given the available roof space
Trusted medical equipment, over 36% sustainable with solar power.
The implementation led to an immediate 54% reduction in Defries' daytime energy costs, an impressive outcome considering there was zero capital outlay on their part and no maintenance requirements. Defries will also gain ownership of the asset in a few years. In total, we expect the system to save Defries Industries a staggering $1.5M.
Upstream views this project as an excellent representation of how on-site clean energy generation - essentially private power stations built to specification - can provide immediate energy savings.
